ModCell Design has developed a range of house types using ModCell Straw Panels. Because the thermal performance of ModCell is so high, we are able to deliver designs that meet the PassivHaus specification. The following is an outline of the specification and how ModCell meets it:
1. u Values
All components of the exterior shell of a PassivHaus are insulated to achieve a U-Value that does not exceed 0.15 W/m2/K. ModCell delivers 0.13.
2. Passive Solar Design
Passive use of solar energy is a significant factor in PassivHaus design. ModCell Design has developed a range of house types that maximise passive solar gain.
3. Glazing
Windows (glazing and frames, combined) should have U-Values not exceeding 0.80 W/m²/K, with solar heat-gain coefficients around 50%. ModCell has partnering arrangements with a number of glazing suppliers that deliver the best performance available in the UK.
4. Air-tightness
Air leakage through unsealed joints must be less than 0.6 times the house volume per hour (this is the equivalent of an air permeability value of less than 1 m3/hr/m2 @ 50 Pa). ModCell Panels deliver equivalent air-tightness.
5. Labyrinth pre-heat and cooling.
Fresh air may be brought into the house through underground ducts that exchange heat with the soil. This preheats fresh air to a temperature above 5°C (41°F), even on cold winter days. Modcell’s unique solid timber floor delivers labyrinth cooling.
6. Minimal space heating & cooling.
PassivHaus targets less than 15 Kwh/m2/yr. ModCell designs deliver equivalent zero heat requirements.
